NWBHL Team Reveal: Annapolis AmbushEdie Schutz has had a rather storied history in the NBHL Women's division. Making the Mylec Cup two out of the three years since its inception (losing a heartbreaker in the finals to the DC Lady Byng Blossoms in Season 2), she started her captaincy out with a heartfelt speech. It was no shock when she used the first overall pick to sign Colleen Murphy and then turned the focus to building a team around her.The best defense is a good offense, and the Annapolis Ambush have plenty of it. With battle tested superstars Tiffany Pfundt and Erika "Score" Moore surrounded by newcomers Madison Nichols and Kelly Yau, there will be many opportunities to light the lamp. We'll be seeing the return of breakout talents Julia Bell and Lisa Burch, who both made a splash last season and hope to carry that momentum into their sophomore seasons. The Ambush will benefit from consistently solid play from Rachael Israel and Gayatri Reilly, rounding out a very impressive front line. The second best defense is a good defense, and Edie will be joined back there by fellow DC Dart Kim Burgess, hoping to recreate their magical run to the Mylec Cup. The speed of Emily Drew and ball control of Kai Frazier will bolster the back lines, creating a well rounded team on both ends of the floor.Will the Annapolis Ambush take the NBHL by surprise, or will this tiger be caught by the toe? The Puck Fumbler’s March 9, 2025, RECAPANNOUNCEMENT:SINCE THE CLAPPER’S (NOW TO BE CALLED THE CRAPPER) PREDICTIONS WERE THE WORST PREDICTIONS IN THE HISTORY OF PROGNOSTICATING, HE/SHE HAS BEEN RELIEVED OF HIS/HER DUTIES.REC: DCHladies vs. Count PuckulaCount Puckula was like a racecar off the starting line---quick, powerful, and ready to take the lead. Arik Katz proved to be too fast and scored twice. Michael Weinberg and his heeled tenders joined Stephen Jones with the other two goals in the 4-1 victory. The Ladies’ goalie blamed the sun being in his eyes, but we all know he just crapped the bed. Crazy 8s vs. Puck DragonsThe Puck Dragons had no ill effects from their extended break and beat the 8’s 3-1. Slappy McSlapperson Derek O’Halloran took six slapshots, but Andrew Vanduzer kept him out of the net. The score could have been more lopsided had it not been for Vanduzer’s performance. Lex Jones and his Lou Ferrigno size bicep collided with Sal Corasaniti in the second period leaving Sal with a possible concussion. The Crazy 8’s could not recover from losing their captain, especially since Alberto Salvado took over as his sub. Tori Bishak, Tim Wilson and Coty Hall each had a goal to secure the win. The Crazy 8’s played their hearts out but finished just short. The absence of the team’s leading scorer, Ryan Gartland, was evident in their one goal game. D3:Stick-Phil-A vs. Gwendolyn Blue KnightsStick-Phil-A and the Gwendolyn Blue Knights played a tight game. Despite Joe Abbott’s two goal performance, Stick-Phil-A walked away with the win. Shai Kornblau and Sammy Merzel each scored to give Phil-A an early two-goal lead. Madison Lau added another goal in the third to seal the deal. Big shout out to Andrew Markowitz and his two assists for the Knights. The always cheerful, Joe Abbott blamed the Clapper and his baseless prediction for motivating the Sticks. Slashing Pumpkins vs. Geri-Hat-TricksThe Pumpkins were short several starters and although they played hard, they could not match the Hat-Tricks intensity. Ian Rubinson, Chris Winkler and Chris Brunetti with his five o’clock shadow, each scored twice. The star of the game belongs to Damian Romanelli who after two months of recovery played exceptionally well and notched a shutout. Deke Energy vs. SharksThe Big Deke’s and Sharks battled until the very end. The Sharks overcame a two-goal deficit behind Dan Bartolucci’s “scorching” slapshot and Chistopher Vasilas’s hat-trick. Christopher’s second goal of the game was a work of art. Shaggy stole the ball from the defense, left his feet, took a wild swing, rolled seven times, did two cartwheels and ran up the board like Bo Jackson. His third goal gave the lead to the Sharks who appeared to have clinched the win. HOWEVER, birthday boy Kyle Shulman filleted the Sharks with his game-tying goal with only 15 seconds left in the game. Ajeet Goraya, Nikolai Christin, and Kevin Foster provided additional offense for the Dekes. Their speed and passing abilities are second to none. D2:The All Blacks vs. FlamingoalsWith a total of twelve substitutes between the teams, the All Blacks and Flamingoals battled to a 2-2 tie. Hunter Haddad and Mellissa Karp each found the back of the net for the Flamingoals. Mike Johnson and Sarav Rajan provided the All Blacks two goals. Jajean Rose looks like a giant in front of the net, covering every inch of space like a mountain blocking the sunrise. Michael Silver has reflexes like a cat in a lightning storm. Both goalies put on a clinic. It was a good game to watch. Gwendolyn Blue Dragons vs. Untouchables (GAME OF THE WEEK)Like two gunslingers in an old western shootout, firing round after round but neither one falling, leaving the dust settling with no clear winner, the Dragons and Untouchables battled to a 5-5 tie. The second period was insane. The teams tallied eight goals combined. Brian Griffin is a hat-trick machine for the untouchables. The Dragons’ Jonathan Jasmin-Benoit led the team with two goals. Both goalies tightened up in the third period preventing either team from scoring. It was a great game all around with enough energy to power a city in a blackout. Stingrays vs. I.P.AJonathan Jasmin-Benoit scored twice as a sub for I.P.A., leading the team to a 3-goal victory over the Stingrays. The Stingrays appeared to be short of a few players with many of their starters M.I.A. However, their effort cannot be overlooked. They battled to the very end and beat Geoff Leinenweber for their only goal of the game in the third period. Besides that score, Geoff played flawlessly and helped I.P.A. secure their 4-1 win. ... The Clapper is shooting hard and fast with some predictions this week. Will he go top drawer or post and out with some of these baseless predictions.REC:DCHladies vs. Count PuckulaCount Puckula, the only team without a win, is set to battle the DCHLadies who are in sole possession of second place. Despite their winless start, Puckula has tied five of their six games. Two of them against DCHladies. Look for the speedy Arik Katz and Rowan Jones to create a lot of offensive pressure. Alberto Salvado needs to play big to keep them from scoring. Offensively, the Ladies’ top scorers, Shai Kornblau, Sammy Merzel, and Monica Mumma, the team’s bartender serving perfect setups without ever taking a sip for herself. This match is a tossup.Crazy 8s vs. Puck DragonsCrazy 8s look to win two games in a row. The Puck Dragons have yet to lose a game. Ryan Gartland has been a magician on the floor averaging just under a point per game for the 8s, but he will be facing the best statistical goalie in the division, Thomas Richardson. Slappy McSlapperson Derek O’Halloran will undoubtedly take no less than 5 slapshots against the 8s. Will goalie Vanduzer continue his hot streak and stop them all? The Clapper predicts a 4-2 win by the 8s due to the Dragon’s month-long break and Sal Corasanti’s constant motivational banter.D3:Stick-Phil-A vs. Gwendolyn Blue KnightsStick-Phil-A, another undefeated team, is set to battle the Gwendolyn Blue Knights. The Sticks are the highest scoring team in the division, but the Blue Knights are not far behind. The Knights look to light up the scoreboard and rebound from last week’s 1-0 loss. They will need at least three goals to overcome Madison Lau’s offensive dominance. Can the Knights offense, led by Patrick Coghlan and Joe Abbott, match Stick-Phil-A’s attack? The Clapper says, “yes”. The Knights win 5-3 behind another strong performance by Cara Burgess.Slashing Pumpkins vs. Geri-Hat-TricksThe Geri-Hat-Tricks have not played in a month. The Slashing Pumpkins should have their regular goalie back. This should be a close game. Will the newly shaved Chris Brunetti find the net with his sizzling slapshot? Kieren McQulkin and his top-notch defense will do all he can to stop him. These evenly matched teams will battle to a 3-3 tie. The Clapper says, “take it to the bank.”Big Deke Energy vs. SharksBrittany Romanelli leads the best defense in the division. The Sharks led by Chris Vasilas have scored the second most points. The Dekes must improve their offense and take the pressure off the defense, especially since their goalie tends to fold like an origami swan. No prediction other than this will not end in a tie.D2:The All Blacks vs. FlamingoalsThe All Blacks face the best team in the division and will have to play their absolute best to overcome the stacked Famingoals. Expect big games form FLA’s Ezra Berger and Rachel Israel but the Clapper predicts an offensive explosion from Aiden Young and a surprise goal by Ben Purse to squeak out a win for the underdogs. 5-3.Gwendolyn Blue Dragons vs. UntouchablesThe D2 standings are tighter than Chris Thorp’s wallet after a group dinner. The Dragons are one of two teams with three wins going into week 7. The Untouchables are in a three-way tie for third place. The tension will be high, the action will be exciting, but the scoring will be low. If passing was a crime, the Dragons assist leader, Georgie Carter, would be sentenced to life in prison. Although the Dragons have not lost in four weeks, the Untouchables’s offense is looking to continue where they left off last week. The Clapper wouldn’t lie, it’s going to be a 2-2 tie.GAME OF THE WEEKStingrays vs. I.P.AEarlier this season, the rays beat I.P.A in a low scoring affair. I.P.A. has been on an offensive tear notching seventeen goals this season and allowing only fourteen. If Sam Brinker continues his offensive dominance, the Rays can be in trouble. Kayla Dunn poses another challenge for the Rays. We still can’t sleep on the Rays. Caleb Enjati, Simon Kanter, and Lew Fontek are just as capable of putting up big numbers. 'The Icehole's' Recap of some fast and furious Sunday action:REC:Crazy 8’s vs. Count PuckulaThe Crazy 8’s broke their winless streak with an impressive victory over Count Puckula. Count Puckula did all they could to stop the 8’s. Michael Weinberg sacrificed his tenders to block a pass. After taking a break to inform his choir they have a new soprano; Michael came back to score an unassisted goal. Later that same period, young Arik Katz tied the game 2-2. David Altschuler saved more shots than I drank at last year’s Brony Convention, unfortunately for him, Jesse DeStacy’s score and Ryan Garland’s two goals proved to be too much for Puckula.A big shout out to the Vanduzers for an excellent father-son game. Tim scored his first goal of the season and Andy played like a brick wall.D3:Big Deke Energy vs. Gwendolyn Blue KnightsAs predicted by the Clapper, Big Deke and the Gwendolyn Blue Knights had a close game. Both teams played incredible defense and battled to the very end. Wale Afolabi finally got a shot past the always rock-solid Cara Burgess in the third. A very fun game to watch indeed. The next star of the game goes to the always positive Sal Corasanti who sacrificed his body and suffered countless injuries as the ref. Few can get hurt by jumping three inches into the air, but Sal managed to do so. We should all strive to be as agile.Sharks vs. Slashing PumpkinsThe Sharks smelled blood and just like a Holiday Inn Continental Breakfast, there were plenty of second helpings with the substitute goalie’s inability to stop rebounds. The Pumpkins played their hearts out, but the Sharks powerful offense was too difficult to overcome. The young Thomas Richardson scored the game’s first goal off an absolute dime from Kelly Yau. The shot of the day belonged to Brian Maggio with a slap shot faster than the building’s Wi-Fi. Shaun Renn nearly earned a shut out had it not been for Kieren McQulkin’s impressive goal late in the second period.D2:All Blacks vs. I.P.A.Lead by the ever-smooth Sam Brinker’s hat trick, I.P.A. put on an offensive show. The All Blacks played hard, took shots, and left it all out on the floor but sometimes the hockey gods are not in your favor. Simply put, the ball did not bounce their way. Kevin Lee, of the All Blacks, had the prettiest goal of the game. Like a performance enhanced Barry Bonds, Kevin crushed the ball mid-air and into the net. Absolutely awesome! I predict a huge turnaround next game, handing the Flamingoals their first loss of the season.Gwendolyn Blue Knights vs. FlamingoalsThe Flamingoals remain undefeated after a hard-fought tie with the Knights. The goalies were lights out. Ben Berger’s defensive adjustments proved to be spot on, however, Hunter Haddad managed to break through with the Knights only goal. Soon thereafter, Ezra Berger responded with a goal assisted by James the Stache Farace. The Clapper’s game of the week prediction was spot on.Stingrays vs. UntouchableThis by far was the most fun to watch. The Stingrays jumped out to a 3-0 lead and appeared to be in complete control of the match until Brian Griffin caught fire, helping the Untouchable overcome a 4-1 lead in the final period. Brian ended the game with a hat trick, helped by assists from Jessica Norad, Corey Robbins and Azarya Yunger. Nantel Suzuki, Simon Kanter, Lew Fontek, and Kevin Stonesifer each scored for the Stingrays. Kudos to both teams for their efforts and entertainment.D1:Oshie’s 11 and Big Stick Diplomacy.Donning a bright orange shirt, Caleb Enjati scored an impressive coast to coast goal giving Big Stick Diplomacy a quick lead. Minutes after taking a shot to the nose, Joe Shea tied the game with an unassisted goal. Joe’s work didn’t end there. Early in the second period he ran into the zone like he owned the place, didn’t pass, didn’t ask for permission, he just paid rent with that puck in the back of the net. Later in the second period, Rachel Israel notched Oshie’s all too important third goal of the game.Despite their short bench, Big Stick Diplomacy battled to the very end. With under 3 minutes left, James Farace dug deep into his mustache, sprinted into the zone with his big stick cradling the ball and sniped one past Jason Stelter. Unfortunately for Diplomacy, Jason Stelter grew thrice his size and stopped a barrage of shots to end the game with a 3-2 win. Oh, Ben Berger had a good game too.Udderly Ridiculous v. Funkmasters ReduxUdderly Ridiculous jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period but the Funk responded with six unanswered goals. Brian Bowen’s strong two-goal performance was not enough to overcome Funk’s dominating offense led by Kevin Ingram’s hat trick. I apologize for the lack of colorful analogies and good-hearted ribbing. Simply put, except for James Farace and Ben Berger, I am too intimidated by D1 players to risk getting pelted by a perfectly aimed slapshot as I walk through the parking lot.Udderly Ridiculous vs. Big Stick DiplomacyAs much as it pains me to say, James Farace played lights out! His hat-trick along with goals from Sumit Dulani, and Kayla Dunn were just too much for the Ridiculous. One must ask if playing back-to-back games played a part in the Ridiculous loss. Udderly had its own stars in the game, Hunter Haddad, Matt Kowalski and Matt Chamberlin goals brought the team to within one score until Kayla Dunn’s late game goal solidified the Big Stick’s 5-3 win.
